Obituary

Richard Walter Oelschlaeger, age 90, a lifelong resident of rural Leavenworth County, Kansas passed away on Monday March 2, 2020 at his home while surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be 10-11am followed by the Funeral at 11am, both Saturday, March 7th at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home. Burial will follow at a later date in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. The family would appreciate memorial contributions to be made in Richards honor to the American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association.
Richard Walter Oelschlaeger was born on April 27, 1929 at his family’s farm in rural Tonganoxie, Kansas and was one of ten children born to Daniel & Henrietta (Scheller) Oelschlaeger. He grew up on the farm and attended Dafer Grade School which was not far from their home. Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1959 during the Korean War. Upon his return from the Service he married Helen Marie Sedgwick on June 10, 1955 at the United Methodist Church in Bonner Springs. Richard had always worked as a farmer and throughout the years he also worked at the Loring Cold Storage loading product, running a High Loader at Loring Caves and other Caves in the Kansas City area. He had also worked at R&W Farms, Marley Cooling Towers, Don King Home Builders and retired from DeSoto Feed & Grain when the Elevator burned down in 2005. In his retirement he still cared for his cattle and ran his own Family Farm.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers: Leo, Robert, Orville, Bernard, Everett & Francis, two sister’s: Grace Clements & Helen Packard and two great-grandsons: Landon & Andrew Berg.
Survivors include his wife Helen Marie Oelschlaeger of the home, two sons: Rick Oelschlaeger and wife Lori of Salem, AR., Keith Oelschlaeger and wife Cindy of Tonganoxie, KS., three daughters: Deborah Wilson and husband Joseph of Linwood, KS., Susan Berg and husband Tony of Leavenworth, KS., Lisa Reynolds and husband Tony of Gardner, KS., 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild on the way. One sister Annette Parsons and husband Bob of Shawnee, KS., three sister-in-law’s: Rosalie Oelschlaeger, Fran Oelschlaeger-Jones and Rosalie Kemler, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
