Obituary for John E. Matthews

John E.  Matthews
John Edward Matthews, age 77 of Kansas City, Kansas, passed from this life on Sunday, April 13, 2014 after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 17th at the Alden-Harrington Funeral home with the burial to follow in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kansas City, KS. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service also at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of the funeral home.
John was born on January 10, 1937 in Kansas City, Kansas, the oldest of four children born to John W. and Margaret H. (Lorenz) Matthews. John was a 1954 graduate of Bonner Springs High School and served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He attended Union Apprenticeship Training for Plumbing spending the first portion of his career as a residential and commercial plumber and finishing his career with Kansas City Kansas Unified School District #500. John was a hardworking and capable man who could fix anything, with perfection, and was proud of his family, whom he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two siblings Margie Matthews and David W. Matthews. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Charlotte (Smith) Matthews of the home, two children Mark Matthews and wife Tawnya of Basehor, KS., Susan Arnspiger and husband Richard of Fairway, KS., one sister Alice Fehrenbach and husband Don of Chandler, AZ., eight grandchildren Laura, Thomas, Sarah, Hannah, John, Allison, Sarah and Grant and two great-grandchildren.
