Wayne was born on August 31, 1932 in Merriam, Kansas and was one of five children born to Oliver Frank & Helen Gladys (Hutson) Hollister. As a young child he grew up in the Rosedale area of Kansas City, Kansas where his parents owned and operated a Dry Goods Store. They later traded the Store for a Farm near Albia, Iowa. Wayne spent his teenage years working on his family’s farm until his father got him into a Trade School where he learned Bricklaying. While in Iowa he met and married the “love of his life” Roberta (Burtlow), to this union three children were born. After eight years of marriage Wayne was a single father, and with the help of his family, he raised his three children. As a young man, still in his twenties, he moved back to Kansas City and soon built his own home in Turner, where he lived the rest of his life. Wayne worked as a Brick Mason in the Kansas City area for many years, working for Nate Apple, Carl Inquest, Manford-Martin and JE Dunn Construction Companies. Wayne was very talented and respected in his trade, for his ability and his strong work ethic. He had worked on several large, unique and difficult projects winning several awards. Wayne would often point out buildings and projects he had worked on including Oak Park Mall, buildings in the County Club Plaza, St. Joseph Medical Center and the Historic Liberty Jail, just to name a few. In 1994 he retired and focused more on his family. Wayne was very loving and giving to his family, always ready to help with any of their projects. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they held a special place in his heart
