Obituary for Wanetta Hammer Jones

Wanetta Hammer Jones, also known as the “The Dairy Queen Lady”, age 99, a lifelong resident of the Loring area and Bonner Springs, Kansas passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, January 1, 2024. The Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 13th at the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends after the Service at the Fellowship Hall of the Church. Private burial in the Highland Park Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas.
Memorial Contributions can be made to “Feed His Lambs” (to feed families in need in the Bonner Springs area), or the Bonner Springs Library.
Wanda “Wanetta” (Scott) was born on March 7, 1924, on the second story of her family’s Grocery Store in Loring, Kansas. She was the oldest of three daughters born to Arthur & Lois (Strickland) Scott. Wanetta grew up at her family’s store (Scott’s Grocery) and attended the Loring one-room school. She graduated from the Bonner Springs High School in the Class of 1942. Modeling in the garment district of Kansas City, Missouri was her first job, from 1942 to 1946. Wanetta and her husband Clarence “Kirk” Hammer married in 1946. Wanetta worked in the Loring store helping her parents. Kirk and Wanetta owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Bonner Springs, beginning in 1976, and continued to operate it with her family for over 40 years. She was very social and was a wonderful hostess, often seen caring for customers in the lobby of the restaurant or giving out “Mistakes” of ice cream to community workers in Bonner Springs. Wanetta was a longtime member of the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church, Loring Sunshine Club, Bonner Springs Rotary Club, EHU (Extension Homemaker Unit), participated in the reading program for grade school children, belonged to the women’s reading circle and regularly attended the Bonner Springs High School “51 Plus Reunion”.
Wanetta was honored to be included in the initial group of inductees into the Bonner Springs High School Hall of Fame in 2006.
She was preceded in death by her Parents, one sister Inez Boyd, her first husband Clarence “Kirk” Hammer in 1981 and her second husband Gaylord Jones, Sr., in 2003.
Survivors include her two children: Dr. Gregory S. Hammer and his wife Karen of Dover, Delaware, Andria K. Hammeke and her husband Steven of Bonner Springs, Kansas. One sister Virginia Lee Poindexter and her husband Jim of Overland Park, KS., six grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. As well as extended family and many friends.
