Obituary for Vicente Avila Jr.

Vicente (Vince) Avila Jr. age 65 of Basehor, KS died on November 19, 2021 at home unexpectedly. He was born on January 22, 1956 in Donna, TX to Vicente and Petra Avila. He joined the Air Force after graduating from Donna High in 1974. Vince met Magdalena Pena while working fields in the summer in Michigan. They were surprised to find that their families lived just 15 minutes apart in south Texas. The two were married on December 23, 1974. He was proud to have served his country, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring in 1995. He then worked in several roles with the University of Kansas in housing and facilities, before retiring as the Director of Facilities in 2018.
Vince lived a life of service, including volunteering for the Food Kitchen and transporting veterans to the VA hospital. He found great joy helping family and friends with their house repairs.
He really enjoyed being an active part of the Knights of Columbus at Holy Angels Catholic Church.
Vince was most proud of being a loving husband and dedicated father of his two sons. He never missed a ball game or sporting event. He instilled in his family a strong work ethic and drive to achieve their goals and led by example in his own life.
He was preceded in death by his father Vicente Avila Sr.
Survivors include his wife Magdalena, mother Petra, sons Vicente III (Julie) and Chris (Holly), sisters Rufina, Alicia, Gloria and brother Ruben. He also has 9 grandchildren who love him dearly: Alex, Haley, Lila, Titus, Addison, Elise, Grayson, Owen, Payton.
Memorial Funeral Mass services will be Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Holy Angels Catholic Church 15438 Leavenworth Rd. Basehor, KS 66007. 9:30 Rosary, 10:00 Visitation, 11:00 Funeral Mass, graveside service immediately following at Holy Angels cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Knights of Columbus Holy Angels Catholic Church (checks payable to KoC, memo: Avila fund), or the food kitchen via checks to Holy Angels with food kitchen in the memo.
