Obituary for Sharon Sue Berning (Hatfield)

Sharon Sue Berning, 79, of Shawnee, KS passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at the Kansas City Hospice House. Friends may call at the Visitation from 9 to 11 am, Prior to the Funeral Service at 11 am, both on Thursday, April 1, at the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church 425 W. Morse in Bonner Springs, KS 66012. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Braymer, MO. Sharon was born on July 26, 1941 in Braymer, MO and graduated from Braymer High School in 1959 where she was the valedictorian. With the encouragement of a Missionary Nurse she heard she started Nursing training in St. Joseph, Mo for 3 years before attending and receiving her B.A. in Nursing from Ashbury College in Kentucky. She then traveled to Portugal where had language training before going to a Methodist Missionary Hospital in Mozambique for 3 years. On her return she married J.R. Berning in 1969 and traveled with him as he served in the military in Germany, Colorado where she would work as a Nurse. After their retirement they moved to Augusta, GA and later to the Shawnee, KS area. Sharon was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and had attended the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church for many years where she was involved in many bible studies. She especially enjoyed playing Bridge and attending Dinner Club with her friends. Sharon is survived by her husband of 52 years J.R. Berning of the home. And one sister Marjorie Drinkard and her husband Thomas of Alabama as well as a host of other family and friends that will miss her greatly.
