Obituary for Roy Eugene Lawrence

Roy Eugene Lawrence, Sr. age 91, of Kansas City, KS and previously of Chase County, KS. passed away on Sunday, Oct. 6th, 2019 at his home while surrounded by his family. Visitation will be 5:30-7pm, followed by the Funeral at 7pm, both Friday, Oct. 18th at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home. Burial will be “High Noon” on Saturday, Oct. 19th at the Strong Township Cemetery, Strong City, KS. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital for Cancer Research.
Roy was the oldest of five children born to Lew & Pauline (Patchin) Lawrence. He was born on June 20, 1928 at his family’s home in Hymer, Kansas. Roy attended the Elmdale School until his father passed away, when Roy was just 15 years old, he then went to work on a Cattle Ranch to help support his mother & siblings. His first job was driving cows home after school for just 5 cents a week, he was in the first grade. Later he took a job with the Burlington Southern Railroad and when he turned 18 he enlisted in the US Army. After the service he returned to Chase County and married Rosemary Watchous, they were married for 62 years, until her death in 2010. Throughout his life, Roy worked as a Rancher & Farmer in Chase County, the Batman Farm and Sni-A-Bar Farm in Grain Valley, MO., and Barcus Farms in Wyandotte County. He later worked construction for Barcus Construction, , Armco Steel, Lacy Steel and retired from Reno Construction. Roy and Rosemary were very active in the Moose Lodge, #753 in Muncie where Roy had held the position of Governor. Roy was also a member of the American Legion Post 199 and a member of the Laborers Local Union #1290. In his retirement, Roy enjoyed gardening, fishing, anything outdoors and spending time with his family and friends. Roy “never met a stranger” and loved visiting with everyone.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, three siblings; LeRoy Lawrence, Doris Clinton, Louella Tharpe, daughter Linda Lemmons, two son-in-laws; Charles Lemmons and Ed Hollister, and granddaughter Christina Lemmons.
Survivors include five children; Donald Lawrence and wife Joyce of Kansas City, KS., Robert Lawrence and wife Debbie of Borger, TX., Barbara Simmons and husband “Goat” of Kansas City, KS., Betty Hollister of Baldwin, KS., and Roy Lawrence, Jr., and wife Lynette of Kansas City, KS. 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, one sister Ella Nora Miller of Alexander, Louisiana, as well as numerous great-great grandchildren and several extended family members and friends.
