Norma Jean Palmer

Norma Jean Palmer, age 96, a longtime resident of Bonner Springs, Kansas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 18th, 2022 while surrounded by her loving family. Visitation will be 10-11am, with the Funeral beginning at 11am, both Monday, Jan. 24th at the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery, Basehor, KS. Memorial Contributions can be made to the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church or the Jarbalo Community Bible Church.

Norma Jean was born on March 25, 1925 in Hamilton, Missouri. She was the youngest of two children born to Harley & Evelyn (Shaw) Martinek. Norma Jean was still very young when her parents moved their family to Bonner Springs. She grew up in Bonner Springs and graduated from Bonner Springs High School in the Class of 1942. She married A.D. “Bud” Palmer on Sept. 6th, 1951 at the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church and together they made their home in Bonner Springs where they raised their two daughters. After high school, Norma Jean worked as a Bookkeeper for Hininger-Roberts Chevrolet until the birth of her oldest daughter in 1954. She and Bud later owned & operated Palmer Trucking from 1962 until their retirement in 2001. Norma Jean was a longtime member of the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church. She was active in the United Methodist Women’s Group and was a Sunday School Teacher for many years. Norma Jean was also active with the Sunflower Quilt Club, the Bonner Springs Reading Circle and the Bridge Club. She was also active in the PTA and was the leader of the local Campfire Girls Club when her daughters were young. Norma Jean and Bud were also members of a Supper Club with their friends the Kirby’s, Fout’s and Haines’ where they would meet once a month as each other’s homes and twice a year have a party with all their children, their children remember this fondly. In their retirement Bud and Norma Jean enjoyed traveling with their Camper. Above all she loved to spend time with her family and especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

Norma Jean was preceded in death by her parents, brother Phillip Martinek and his wife Lucille. Her husband of 59 years, A.D. “Bud” Palmer. Daughter Rhonda Thomas and son-in-law John Thomas.

Survivors include her daughter Karol Lohman and husband Terry of rural Leavenworth, KS. Three grandchildren: Tyler Lohman of rural Leavenworth, Molly (Thomas) Kling and her husband Darren of rural Bonner Springs and Trey Lohman and his wife Amanda also of rural Leavenworth. One great-granddaughter Avery and many, many friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of Basehor Country Place Senior Living for their loving care of Norma Jean over the past three years, along with the support of Evergreen Hospice.
