Obituary for Matilda Bennett

Matilda Bennett, age 75, of Bonner Springs, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, February 20th, 2024. Visitation will be from 9am to 11am, with the Funeral beginning at 11am, both on Saturday, March 9th, at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 609 N. 18th St. Kansas City, KS. 66102. Burial will follow in the Bonner Springs Cemetery.

Matilda was born July 8, 1948, in Idabel, Oklahoma to Elmer and Lena Mae Jones who preceded her in death. She was the baby of six children: two brothers proceeded her in death; Larry Peters and Floyd McFadden. Matilda attended Booker T Washington High School in Idabel where she excelled in academics. She graduated Cum Laude in 1967. Upon graduation, she moved to Kansas City, KS, and later to Fort Riley, KS where she met the love of her life John Bennett. They married in 1971. To this union, three children were born. In 1976, Matilda and John moved to Bonner Springs, KS where she remained a life-long resident until her death. She worked at various jobs in the early 1970’s: Meeks and Whyte Law Firm as a legal secretary, EOF, and The C&D Center in Bonner Springs.

In 1978, Matilda became a domestic engineer, yet continued to serve the community as a notary republic for over 40 years free of charge. She always said, “God has already blessed me to be a blessing to someone else!” Matilda was truly a servant of God helping anyone in need whether it be financing, cooking you a warm meal, or praying with you and for you on the spot.

She was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church from 1971 to 1985 where she served as a deaconess, sang in the choir, and helped wherever needed. In 1985, Matilda became a member of the First Baptist Church in Bonner Springs where she served as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the women’s mission, Rebekah Circle. Matilda later rejoined Macedonia and remained a member until her death. She was an excellent cook, mother, sister, friend, loved to sing, but most of all a true faithful servant to the Lord! “Hold on to God’s Unchanging Hand” was one of her favorite songs. That she did until the end!
