Obituary for Mark Allen Journey

Mark Allen Journey, 63, of Linwood, Kansas, passed into the arms of our Heavenly Father on August 28, 2021, at 9:11 pm. He died at home in the loving embrace of his family.

Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:30 am on Friday, September 3, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 21515 W 101st Street, Lenexa, KS, 66220. Funeral services will follow at noon. Interment will be Saturday, September 4 at 11:00 am at Moore Cemetery, 1935 S Ash, Nevada, MO 64772.

Mark was born September 12, 1957 in Kansas City, Kansas. He graduated from Basehor High School in 1975, and purchased and rebuilt his first Porsche that same year. He went on to complete Porsche factory training and owned and operated his own repair shop in Merriam, KS for over 30 years. In 1982, he met the love of his life, Shelly Sue Armstrong, and they were married on the first day of Spring in 1986. They raised six children in the Basehor-Linwood area, planting a big garden every year with their his-and-hers John Deere tractors and entertaining many dear friends with good food and music.

Mark was a master technician who lived, breathed, and loved all things Porsche. If it was broken; he could fix it. If it was fast… he made it faster. Each of his children knew equal parts joy and terror of going on a test drive with dad after he’d finished building a motor or tweaking a carburetor. He taught us all that tires should be black and round, to always check the oil, that front wheel drive oversteer is a thing, and would always ask his eternal question: “If it was an airplane, would you fly on it?”

Mark was preceded in death by his father, James Randall Journey, his mother, Mary Lou Wade, and by his brother, Ronald Journey. He is survived by his wife Shelly Journey of Linwood, KS, his brother, James Randall “JR” Journey, II of El Dorado Springs, MO, and his children: Grant Journey of Yuba City, CA, Hollie Journey (Kari Jackson) of Lawrence, KS, Marcus (Heidi) Journey of Shreveport, LA, Lindsey (Brian) Brock of Daleville, VA, Chelsey (Billy) Jaskinia of Basehor, KS, and Daniel (Alyssa) Journey of Clayton, NC. Mark adored each of his 13 grandchildren: Bridger, Tuesday, Theodora, Benson, Mads, Avett, Bo, Porter, Caroline, Charlotte, Mira, Piper, and Lili, raising them on bottomless tractor rides, Sunday afternoon snuggles, and trips out to the garden to pick corn.
