Lela M. Wiley, age 91, of Basehor, KS, passed away Monday Nov. 4, 2019. Visitation will be 6-8pm Thursday, Nov. 7th, and Funeral 10:30am Friday, Nov. 8th both at the Basehor United Methodist Church, burial to follow in the Glenwood Cemetery in Basehor.
Memorial Contributions can be made to the Fairmount United Methodist Church or the Basehor Historical Society.
Lela was born on April 6, 1928 in Lenox, Iowa and was the only child born to Lloyd & Grace (Davids) Brown. Lela grew up in Corning, Iowa and graduated from Corning High School. While attending Southwest Community College in Creston, Iowa, to obtain her Teaching Certificate she met Robert “Bob” Wiley. They were married on Nov. 7th, 1946 in Corning, IA. where they made their home until 1954, when they moved their family to Basehor, KS. Bob & Lela raised their four children in Basehor and Lela worked as a Cook for the Basehor School District for many years. Later she worked at White’s Department Store and the Ben Franklin Store both in Bonner Springs. Lela then opened her own Silk Flower Shop, “The Flower Cottage” in Basehor. Over the years, Lela has been very active in her community. She was a member of the; Basehor United Methodist Church, was a past Board Member of the Field of Dreams, a founding member of the Basehor Historical Society, Merry Matrons, Basehor Gold Pride, Fraternal Order of Eagles. She and Bob were instrumental in forming the Basehor VFW, Post 11499. Most recently Lela had been attending the Fairmount United Methodist Church.
Lela was preceded in death by her parents including her adoptive father Colin Anstey and a grandson Bobby Wiley.
Survivors include her four children; Dennis Wiley & Sherri Colbert of Bedias, Texas, Lyle Wiley and wife Elizabeth, Mary Leonard and husband Ed of Basehor, KS, and Marie Heath and husband Shann of Lake Ozark, MO., 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great granddaughters. As well as several extended family and a community of friends.
