John D. Pembleton

John Dewey Pembleton, age 85, of Kansas City, Kansas passed away peacefully on Friday, January 7th, 2022. Visitation will be Noon-1:00pm on Thursday, Jan. 13th at the Edwardsville Christian Church, followed by the Graveside Funeral Service at 1:30pm at the Edwardsville Cemetery. Memorial Contributions can be made to the KC Pet Project or the American Cancer Society.

John was born on June 27th, 1936 in Bonner Springs, Kansas and was one of six children born to Floyd & Inez (Downing) Pembleton. He grew up in Bonner Springs and graduated from Bonner Springs High School in the Class of 1955. After high school he took a job as a Mechanic at Ernie Frey Ford in Bonner Springs. While working there he met Barbara (Risk), they were married on January 21st, 1956 and together made their home in Kansas City, Kansas where they raised their three children. In July 1959 John took a job at Griffin Wheel Company in Muncie where he worked for 25 years as a Production Worker and then as a Maintenance Mechanic. While at Griffin, John was a member of the International Order of Steel Workers Union. After Griffin Wheel closed the Muncie plant he then worked for the Turner School District as a Bus Mechanic until his retirement. John and Barbara were longtime members of the Edwardsville Christian Church.

John was a lifelong fan of his beloved Chiefs, Royals and Jayhawks Basketball. Another passion included racing as long as they drove Fords. He traveled to Indianapolis to the Brickyard and was delighted when a NASCAR track was built in his backyard at the Legends. He attended as many races there as he possibly could.

John was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Bob Pembleton and Donna Ray Gallagher. One daughter Pauline Moran. His wife Barbara A. Pembleton in 1990 and later by the other significant woman in his life, Irene Watson in 2020.

Survivors include his daughter Donna Jo O’Hare and her husband Robert and son Jeff Pembleton all of Kansas City, KS. Three siblings: JoAnne Pembleton, Jerry Pembleton (wife Ethel), Keith Pembleton (wife Cookie). Two grandchildren: Patricia Johnson (husband Richard), Theresa Moran, five great-grandchildren as well as many dear friends who are considered family.
