Obituary for JoAnn Grimes (Francisco)

JoAnn Grimes passed away on June 26, 2022.

She was born April 21, 1935, to Vinard and Josephine Francisco in San Diego, California.
As an only child, JoAnn enjoyed sketching, reading and horseback riding with her best friend Barrie. After graduating from Grossmont High School in La Mesa, California, she met her beloved future husband, Bob, where they were pinned at San Diego State University. They wed in 1954 while Bob served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Bob’s career in law enforcement allowed the family to live throughout the country. While raising three children, their journey led them to Maryland, where JoAnn combined her love of books and children to become a school librarian. Next stop was Kansas, where she developed into a very skilled bowler. After two years in Texas, and 7 years in Maryland, JoAnn and Bob moved to Louisiana as empty nesters. JoAnn became a much sought-after seamstress for her talents perfecting Mardi Gras ball gowns.

They remained in Louisiana until Hurricane Katrina suggested they retire to Shawnee, Kansas where she embraced her role as a caring grandmother. Both JoAnn and Bob became active in their homeowner’s association and spent many weekends with family at the Lake of the Ozarks. JoAnn shared her passion for word puzzles with several of her children and grandchildren. No matter where they lived, people made a point of telling their children how kind and sweet their mother was.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Robert “Bob” Grimes, daughter Carrie Sue Snyder, and grandson Kevin Shigeru Grimes.

She is survived by two children:
Daughter Kimberly (Dan Tallman) Miller-Tallman, Bonner Springs, KS
Son Ronald (Shigemi) Grimes, Vienna, VA

JoAnn is also survived by seven grandchildren: Kori, Kirk, Leslie, Robbie, Ben, Katie and Kelsey.

She will be celebrated at a private family gathering. Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
