Obituary for Jack R. Foster

Jack R. Foster, age 85, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2023. Born January 13, 1938, in Cedar Vale, KS, Jack was preceded in death by his parents Jess and Dorothy Foster, his brothers Bill Foster and Jim Foster and sister Nadine Foster. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Donna Foster, and daughters Sharon (Buzz) McClain and Kristi (Lance) Everson, grandchildren Logan (Lauren) Everson and Victoria “Tori” Everson, sisters-in-law Lesta Foster and Coena Foster, and nephews Fletcher Foster and Brent Foster.

In his early years, Jack received a Medical Technology degree from Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, and interned at St. Francis Hospital. He worked at Cedar Vale Hospital and then in adult care home administration in Arkansas City, KS, before relocating to Bonner Springs, KS, in 1968 to become Administrator at Kaw Valley Manor. Jack invested in properties to support the community, served a term as President of the Rotary Club and was active in the Methodist Church serving a year as Board Secretary.

Jack was a tireless leader and highly active in the Kansas Health Care Association, having served as President and involved with many committees often as Chairman. During this time, he became a consultant for nursing homes in Kansas and Colorado. At the national level, he was the Region 6 Vice President for two terms for the American Health Care Association (AHCA), contributed to health care studies across Europe, and attended monthly AHCA meetings in Washington D.C. where he served as Secretary.

Following his health care career, Jack pursued his passion for thoroughbred horse racing for more than 20 years. He founded Foster Thoroughbred Farm where he bred Kentucky-raised thoroughbred stallion, Dunham’s Gift. He won the coveted TOBA award for top owner in the state of Kansas and worked with Kansas legislatures to develop regulations for The Woodlands racetrack in Kansas City. Jack put his heart and soul into anything he was involved with to ensure integrity was upheld.

In retirement, he worked for the Kansas Turnpike Authority and liked visiting with the travelers passing through his toll booth. In his younger years, Jack enjoyed snow ski trips to Colorado with family and friends. Besides his family, Jack loved Elvis, Reba and anything chocolate!
