Hurshel E. Surritte
Hurshel Surritte, age 81, of Bonner Springs, Kansas passed away on August 7, 2021, surrounded by his children.
Hurshel was born July 5, 1940, in Camden Point, Missouri. He graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1958 and married Carolyn DeMaranville on June 23, 1962. They celebrated 49 years of marriage before Carolyn’s passing in 2011.
He worked for National Cold Storage as a plant manager for 55 years. One of his most proud accomplishments was being a member of AA and his 9 years of sobriety.
Hurshel loved deer hunting, fishing, golfing, NASCAR, and especially the Kansas City Chiefs. He was famous for his deer sausage that he loved sharing with family, friends, and coworkers.
Hurshel was a longtime season ticket holder at the Kansas City Chiefs where he loved tailgating. He was best known for his grilled turkey and bacon roll-ups that he shared with other tailgaters. Later in life, he enjoyed trips with his son to the Master's Golf Tournament, fishing in Canada and Alabama, and many NASCAR races at different tracks.
Hurshel was a master at making biscuits and gravy which was a favorite for his family on Christmas morning.
He enjoyed woodworking alongside his dad and made many special family keepsakes.
Hurshel kept an immaculate lawn, winning Bonner Beautiful’s Yard of the Month, and could grow beautiful flowers and vegetables.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clifford, July 2013, and Ivene, March 2013, and his beloved dog Mitzi.
Survivors include daughter Lesa Rittinghouse (Dale) of Bonner Springs, son Chris Surritte (Jeanette) of Raleigh, NC, and Teresa Rose (Ed) of Bonner Springs. Nine grandchildren, Kristen Polackoff (Brian), Brad Rittinghouse, Melissa McMullen (Brian), Tanner McCleary (Janel), Nikki Rittinghouse, Dylan McCleary, Chase McCleary, Bridget Rittinghouse (Garrett Ford), and Lexi McCleary. Eight great-grandchildren, Amelia, Jeanie, Brycen, Stella, Nora, Mason, Michael, and Dorothy. Brother Elbert Surritte (Mary) of Harlem, GA, two uncles, Elvis Fox and Glen Fox, and multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial Contributions can be made to the Bonner Springs Animal Rescue or Phoenix Hospice, both in care of the Funeral Home.
Visitation will be 10-11am., followed by a Memorial Service at 11am, both Friday, August 20th, 2021 at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Bonner Springs Cemetery.
