Obituary for H. Howard Quinlan
H. Howard Quinlan, age 94, of Olathe, Kansas passed away on December 29, 2019. Visitation will be 6 to 8pm Monday, January 6th and the Funeral will be 10am Tuesday, January 7th, both at the Faith Baptist Church in Olathe. Burial will follow in the Edwardsville Cemetery.
HAROLD HOWARD QUINLAN
Howard Quinlan was born October 31, 1925, in Hartford, Kansas to a farmer, Howard Drummond Quinlan, and his wife, Agnes Lucille (Collins). Howard was the youngest of twins with his brother Homer and had an older brother (Alfred), two older sisters (Eunice and Lavonne), a younger sister (Lois) and younger brother (Melvin). Growing up he lived at Quinlan Station on the interurban line between Linwood and Bonner Springs, moved to Basehor, Kansas, and in 1941, settled in Edwardsville, Kansas. Howard was saved at sixteen years of age after his oldest brother, Alfred, died in an aircraft crash in the Army Air Corps. On the day after their eighteenth birthday, he and his twin joined the Merchant Marines, and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters through July 1946. Their ship docked in Manila Bay after its liberation, and God began working in his heart. After the war he returned to Edwardsville, Kansas where he surrendered to preach while a member of The Church in the Country. While there he met and was married to Eleanor Smith on March 7, 1947.
In July 1947, Howard & Eleanor moved to Ft. Worth, Texas, where both attended the Bible Baptist Seminary. Their first son, Howard Richard, was born in Ft. Worth. In October 1949, Howard and Eleanor moved to Hamilton, KS, where Howard had his first pastorate and their second son, Allen, was born. Howard next pastored for a short time in Vallejo, California, and in 1953, was called to pastor the Stockton Bible Baptist Church in Stockton, California. Their third son, John, was born in Stockton.
The Lord reminded Howard of the need he had seen while in Manila at the end of World War II and called Howard and Eleanor as missionaries to the Philippine Islands. They were approved in 1957 through the Baptist Bible Fellowship International and began deputation. During deputation, their fourth son, Larry, was born. They arrived in the Philippines in November 1958, and after a period of preparation in Manila, started the Olongapo Bible Baptist Church.
In 1961, Howard was called to pastor Mountain View Bible Baptist Church in Angeles City, Philippines. This became their home base for missions outreach. In 1965, the church started the Mountain View Baptist Bible Institute (later Seminary), a training center to prepare Filipinos to preach, teach, and reach others for Christ. Howard led and taught in the Seminary for many years. In 1977, he led the church to start a Christian school, Mt. View Bible Baptist Academy. Through the outreach of their ministry, over 200 works were started throughout the Philippine Islands.
Howard and Eleanor served the Lord faithfully in the ministries at Mt. View until 1990 when he was asked to teach at Atlantic Baptist Bible College in Richmond, VA. Howard chaired the missions department and taught all the missions courses. About five or six years later, the school developed another format, and Howard and Eleanor were asked to serve in South Africa to relieve missionaries Rex and Ginnie Switzer for furlough. Not quite two years later, the Switzers returned from the field and Howard and Eleanor returned to their home in Edwardsville, Kansas. From there, they traveled to the Philippines each school year to teach in the Seminary at Mt. View Bible Baptist Church, and returned to Edwardsville each summer.
In 2008, they retired, and remained at home until the fall of 2013, when they sold their house and moved into an apartment in their son’s home in Olathe, KS. Family waffle breakfasts on Saturday mornings and dinner after Sunday services at Faith Baptist Church were a highlight of the time there. In March 2018 the decision was made to transition to an assisted living facility. But Eleanor’s final illness began even before they moved and God granted her wish to come Home with Him on May 31, 2018. Howard remained at Heritage Avonlea Cottages of Olathe, where he testified of God’s grace and saw six residents accept Christ as their personal Savior. He faithfully attended Faith Baptist Church and rejoiced to hear Bro. Wes Stewart preach God’s Word until Sunday, one week before he died.
While at Avonlea, Howard longed to be with his Creator and Savior, and missed his life’s companion of seventy-one years. His health and stamina declined, but when someone offered to pray for him, he would respond, “Pray that I get sick, so I can go Home.”
Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; his parents, Howard and Agnes Quinlan; brothers Alfred, Melvin, and Homer; and sisters Eunice, Lavonne, and Lois. Survivors include sons Howard Richard (wife Janet), Allen (Gloria), John (Pam), and Larry (Nancy); 12 grandchildren: Tracy Robinson (Tim), Joseph Quinlan (Laura), Benjamin Quinlan (Meagan), Kari Quinlan, Ashley Ferguson (Aaron), Timothy Quinlan (Anna), Micheal Quinlan (Shaleena), Mark Quinlan (Kate), Mindi Cushing (Richard), Daniel Quinlan (Erin), Cindy Quinlan, and Kenneth Quinlan (Emily); 23 great-grandchildren: Matthew Robinson (Brianna), Samuel, Tiffany, and Kaity Robinson; Luke and Micah Quinlan; Naomi, Noah, Phoebe, and Elijah Quinlan; Avery and Ailey Ferguson; Abigail and Jacob Quinlan; Atlas Quinlan; Devon, Shawn, and Cheyenne Quinlan; Ruby, Seamus, Lucy, and Killian Quinlan; and Kenlee Quinlan; and 1 great-great-grandchild: Macklyn Robinson.
