Guy Hamilton Grimes met his Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 7, 2020. He was born on May 13, 1923 in Garfield, Arkansas to Wilson and Mattie Grimes. He was one of 10 children. His formal education took place in a one room school house, graduating from eighth grade at the age of 14. Although that concluded his public education, Guy gained much wisdom during his long life. He entered the Seabees in 1943 and served 3 years. Upon re-entering civilian life he met Lois J. Chowning, marrying her on August 5, 1947. God blessed them with 4 children, Linda, Don, Sherin, and Wilson. It was during this time that the Lord drew Guy’s heart to himself and He responded by accepting God’s free gift of salvation. God changed both his heart and his life. Guy loved to take his family to church, sing gospel songs, read the Word and memorize scripture. Guy worked for the Rock Island Railroad. Everyone knew him as one who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He was always quick to share the good news of Jesus Christ with those he worked with. He loved to garden and had many bumper crops. This produce not only fed his family but was also given to many in the church family. Guy played on the church softball team for years as the pitcher. Everyone loved “Pappy.” His train whistle was famous. He was an avid fisherman, fishing whenever he got a chance. He and Lois spent much time in Oklahoma fishing on Grand Lake. After Lois was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Guy faithfully and lovingly cared for her in their home with the help of their daughter Linda until the Lord took her to be with Him.
After marrying Rosie in October of 2004, they moved to Tonganoxie to be closer to family. Again, Guy cared for Rosie until her death in 2012. It is hard to capture a life of 97 years into a few words. Dad has meant so much to so many people. God and family meant everything to him. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, always asking about each one. He leaves a legacy of faithfulness, humility, contentment, doing the right thing, and most of all obeying JESUS. Some of the last words we heard from him were, “Be a witness, always be a witness.” Oh, how we would have all loved to be there when he was ushered into the presence of his Savior and heard the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your rest.” To those of us who know, love, and obey JESUS, we can all say in unison, “We will see you
again.” He was preceded in death by: His parents, Mattie and Wilson Grimes, his wife Lois Grimes, his wife Rosie Grimes, eight brothers and sisters. Survivors include four children: Linda and Garry Caldwell, Tonganoxie, Kansas; Don and Betty Grimes, Olathe, Kansas; Sherin and Terri Grimes, Avon, Indiana; Wilson and Torenda Grimes, Spring Hill, Kansas. One sister Elna DeGrave, Kansas City, Kansas. 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren.
