Obituary for Georgia Alice Knight

Georgia Alice Knight was born March 20th in Montreal, Mo to Richard Richmond Witt and Altha Jane Thornton Witt. She will be forever 39 and holding. She loved to share childhood memories when her mother would take her and her siblings on picnic adventures where they would cook fish and pies over a campfire and dig for artifacts. She bragged that she was a tomboy. Her family moved to the Edwardsville, KS area in the late 1930s, where she attended Primary School and later Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, KS. Georgia was united in marriage to Neil R. Knight on February 8, 1946, until his death from cancer in 1981.

Georgia loved her family and extended family and friends throughout her lifetime. Her house was filled with her children, nephews, nieces, and young people who were always welcome at “Gigi’s” house. She was a renowned cook known for her fried chicken, blackberry cobblers, angel food cake, and tacos. She owned and managed small restaurants in the Muncie/Kansas City, KS area in the early 1960s. She also showcased her good cooking by doing concessions for Hiatt Auction for many years, serving biscuits & gravy, Chili, hotdogs, and hamburgers fresh off the griddle. She enjoyed landscaping her large yard on S. 74th Terrace in KCK, shopping and going to estate sales with her sister Frances and eating out with friends. Georgia was very active at the Edwardsville Christian Church, in Edwardsville Kansas, and served as a deaconess for many years until her health limited her abilities. Georgia retired from Permatex/Loctite in the Fairfax District where she worked on “the line” and retired proudly as a forklift driver. She was a member of the Teamsters Local 41 until retirement. Georgia was a hard worker and extremely generous to family and friends. She knew the sorrow of losing two sons and her husband too soon and the joy of raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Georgia was preceded in death by her husband Neil R Knight, of Kansas City, KS, sons, Timothy Neil Knight and Christopher Ralph Lynn Knight, parents Richard and Althea Witt, Brothers: Robert, Junior, Jack, Richard, David, Walter Witt, and Aubrey Dale (who died in infancy), Sisters: Jessie Forbes, Wilmer Dean Terrell, and Frances Roberts. Daughter in-Law: Vicki Knight.

She leaves behind her sons Paul Knight-Kansas City Ks., George (Carol)Knight-Bonner Springs, KS, and daughter Sherry (Daniel) Hiatt-Tonganoxie, KS. Grandchildren Kimberly (Mike) Pomatto, Christopher George Knight, Jerry Knight, Carolyn (Joe) Caiharr, Rebecca (Caleb) Gordon, Melissa (Kris) Tanis, and Christy (David) Sprague. She also leaves behind 19 great-grandchildren, a host of nephews and nieces she loved very much, and her dear brother-in-law Paul and wife Donna Roberts as well as treasured and faithful friends.

Visitation will be held Monday, February 20th from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM at Alden Harrington Funeral Home in Bonner Springs, KS. A celebration of Georgia’s beautiful life will be held at the Edwardsville Christian Church, Edwardsville, Ks., Tuesday, February 21st starting at 11:00 AM, with a short visitation prior. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, KS.

A special thanks to the faithful staff at Riverbend Post Acute who cared for Gigi during her time with them.
