Obituary for Gaylene Oberndorfer (Davis)

Gaylene Oberndorfer, of Basehor, KS passed away Tuesday, September 21st, 2021 after a long fight with COVID. Gaylene was born on August 16, 1949 in Fredonia, KS, the daughter of the late Harold and Wanda Davis.

On July 25, 1969 Gaylene married the love of her life, Jack Oberndorfer. They had two daughters, Kelly and Stacy, and one son, Justin. Jack and Gaylene were married for 52 incredible years. They had a strong marriage filled with faith, love and family and truly lived every moment as best friends. Gaylene and Jack shared a love for the lake and mountains. They spent many weekends at their Ozark lake home and summers in their cabin in the mountains of Red River, New Mexico. They also loved spending holidays together with their growing families.

One of Gaylene’s greatest joys was her grandchildren. Her servant heart was most evident as she made each grandchild feel special through recognizing their interests, passions, unique talents and making them feel treasured. She was always looking for ways to bring joy with things like keeping the candy bowls filled and her secret hiding spot stocked with a yummy surprise.

Gaylene’s greatest gift to everyone around her was her humble presence that spread warmth through her beautiful smile, kind blue eyes and warm hugs. Her thoughtfulness was quiet but powerful and impacted everyone around her, much of the time unknown to others, but transforming the single individuals she blessed one at a time through a gift, a flower, a smile, a text, or a listening ear.

Her ability to spread joy was most evident at the holidays. Gaylene made Christmas and birthdays magical. Each gift was thoughtful and personal, making the recipient feel special and loved. She also had a gift of hospitality that she shared through her talent of cooking and her love truly passed through each special dish. The holidays were made complete by walking in the door and smelling all of the wonderful food she so lovingly prepared. Her food is memorable not just for the taste, but for the hug and thoughtfulness that accompanied each meal or treat.

Gaylene’s strength was in her overwhelming compassion, thoughtfulness, and quiet love of others. She was quietly strong in her faith, her conviction, and loyalty to family. She worked for the Basehor-Linwood School district for 29 years and loved the students and her coworkers. She was always supportive and involved in the lives of those she loved. Her smile impacted everyone around her.
