Obituary for Gayle Eugene Ferguson

The Portales, New Mexico community lost one of its favorites: ninety-year-old Gayle
Ferguson on February 25, 2021. He hoped to live a full century; he likely would have if COVID-
19 had not robbed him of the opportunity. His heart ached when he moved away from Portales
almost six years ago, and to this day he never forgot his many friends. He was so grateful for all
the long distance love and support he received over the years. In the years after he left, he
especially cherished their love and support, which managed to reach him—though it had to
travel many miles!
We will remember Gayle for so many reasons. He was a man who loved all of
creation—especially the mountains where he could hike, fish, and spend time enjoying the
beauty of nature with friends. We will remember him even more for his devotion to God,
which inspired a life of service to his country, church, community, family and friends. He was
admired and respected for his godly character. Many readers will remember how much of a
“character” Gayle himself was! His heart-warming stories were famous or infamous, depending
who you ask; he always had a tale, a joke, or a one-liner to cheer or comfort his listeners. We
will always treasure our memories of Gayle.
As this chapter of his life has closed, another has started. He is now in Heaven with his
love, Gail, whom he mourned every day since her passing. Today, Gayle and Gail will be
together again for eternity. This is what he has looked forward to for so many years: being in
Heaven with God. He’s long anticipated being escorted there by Jesus to be reunited with
those he loved and has been separated from. So for now we say good-bye to a great friend,
husband, father, grandfather, Army veteran, and servant of God. But rest assured: he left
behind for us all an example of how to live with conviction and commitment to loving God and
our neighbor.
Gayle was particularly fond of his brothers and sisters at Third and Kilgore Church of
Christ and his co-workers at Portales National Bank. The Ferguson family is grateful for all the
love and support these community families have given us throughout the years.
There will be no public memorial at this time. Donations may be made to the Gail
Ferguson Scholarship for Communication Disorders, ENMU Foundation, to support future
education. ENMU Station 8, 1500 S. Avenue K, Portales, New Mexico 88130.
