Obituary for Eva Marie Bates

Eva Marie Bates, 91, of Basehor, KS passed away peacefully at the Lansing Care and Rehabilitation Nursing Home in Lansing, KS. The Visitation will be from 10 to 11 am and the Memorial will follow at 11 am, both on Wednesday, April 20, at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home in Bonner Springs, KS with burial of ashes to follow in Glenwood Cemetery near Basehor, KS.
Eva, the eldest of four loving sisters, was born December 30, 1930 to Audra Bell Sulser Askew and Edwin Criswell Askew in Miami County, KS. She was raised in Kansas and Missouri and attended Basehor High School where she was a cheerleader and met her future husband, Edward James Bates. The devoted couple was married for more than 50 years before his death in August of 2002. They were the proud parents of three children - Connie Jean Wodlinger of Palm Beach, FL; Wade Edwin Bates (deceased 2019) and Judith Ann Rich of Tonganoxie.
Soon after marrying, Eva and Edward started in nursery and landscaping business, Bates Nursery. With a great deal of hard work and dedication, they created a successful business that serve the community for many years. They generously donated 5 acres of land for the Basehor City Park soon after their retirement.
Known for her beautiful, well-manicured flower beds, Eva enjoyed spending countless hours creating gorgeous designs in her ample garden. She was an excellent cook, organizing many Sunday family gatherings. Eva had a great appreciation for fine art, nature and loved to travel. She and Edward embarked on many cruises and enjoyed time with their beloved family. One of their favorite destinations as a young family was Tablerock Lake where they enjoyed long days on their boat and skiing as Eva was an accomplished slalom water skier. She also loved square dancing and country music.
She was preceded in death by her husband Edward James Bates, sister Betty Lou Babcock, and son Wade Edwin Bates.
Eva is survived by her loving relatives; two daughters Connie Jean Wodlinger, Judith Ann Rich, two sisters Erma Jean Wheeler and Anna May Murphy, five grandchildren, Jacquelyn Renee journey, Mark Louis Wodlinger, Stephen Robert Rich, Joel Edward Rich and Michael Adam Rich. Five great grandchildren and many friends and family whose lives she has touched throughout her life.
