Obituary for Ethel Kay Spilker (Greer)

Ethel Kay (Greer) Spilker, age 79, of the Piper area of Kansas City, Kansas passed away on Saturday, December 19th, 2020.

Updated Service Information - Her family is planning a Celebration of Life Gathering from Noon - 5pm, Saturday, April 2nd, 2022 at The Barn at Schwinn Produce Farm, 17624 Santa Fe Trail, Leavenworth, KS. This will be an "Open House" type of gathering and everyone is welcome to stop by anytime between Noon to 5pm to share stories and to remember Ethel. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the “I Love Children’s Mercy Fund” or the “Ronald McDonald House Charities”.

Ethel was born on August 20, 1941 in Sedalia, Missouri and was one of five children born to Harold & Leone (Dick) Greer. She grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated from Wyandotte High School in the Class of 1959. It was at a softball game for her sister that Ethel met Harold Spilker who became the “Love of Her Life”. The couple was married on February 20, 1960, in the middle of a snow storm, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Kansas City, KS. Together they made their home in Kansas City, KS where they raised their two daughters. Ethel was proud to have started her college education around the same time her youngest daughter started grade school. She went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from the University of Kansas. Ethel then went to work as a speech pathologist with the USD 500 School District. Later she took a job with the state of Kansas working as a case worker with the Social Rehabilitation Service and transitioned into a welfare fraud investigator, retiring in September of 2001. Throughout her life, Ethel enjoyed gardening and cooking, but above all she loved spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two siblings: Deana Brauer and William Dale “John” Greer.

Survivors include her loving husband, Harold Spilker of the home, Their two daughters: Cindy Spilker of Liberty, MO., (Jim Redington of Gladstone, MO.) Stephanie Spilker (Scott Taylor) of Overland Park, KS., two brothers: Duane Greer (Joyce) of Piper, KS., Charles Keith Greer (Elaine) of Fort Collins, CO., as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
