Obituary for Emma Jean Dunn (McDowell)

EMMA JEAN DUNN

Jean was born April 27, 1935 in Brumley, MO. She attended high school in Iberia, MO and graduated in 1953. After graduating from high school, she moved to the Kansas City area where she met Harlan Erickson. Jean married Harlan Erickson in 1955. They had one son, James F. (Jim) Erickson. She attended cosmetology school and worked for various hair salons throughout the years. She remarried in 1970 to Donald Dunn, and they were married until September 5, 2015 (45 years) when he preceded her in death. When Jean married Don, she became a minister’s wife while Don served as the director of Tall Oaks Camp in Linwood, KS until December 1977. They moved to San Antonio, TX where Don became the Christian Church Disciples of Christ Area Minister for the Blue Bonnet area. While there, Jean continued to work as a beautician. They moved to McAllen, TX where Don was the minister at First Christian Church and Jean helped in the church office. They served there for three years and then moved to Dumas, TX where Don was minister at First Christian Church of Dumas. Jean worked in a hair salon until they retired in 1999, and they returned to San Antonio for a year. They decided to move back to the Kansas City area to live closer to Jean’s son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Toni. They lived there until 2015 when Don passed away. Jean continued to live with Jim and Toni until she went home to be with the Lord.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Don; both parents, Frank and Ethyl McDowell; siblings Jewell (Lois) McDowell, Gerald (Emma) McDowell, Nadine (Een) Luttrell, Lora Mae (George) Graham, Marvin McDowell, Charlie (Kathleen) McDowell, Leonard McDowell, Donald (Elaine) McDowell, and Dorothy (Jim) Barnhart. She was the last living of ten children.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Betty McDowell of Basehor, KS; her son, Jim (Toni) Erickson of Lone Jack, MO; grandchildren Joni Bain of Blue Springs, MO; Jini Erickson of Nashville, TN; James (Alisha) Erickson of Hopkinsville, KY; and Joshua (Tricia) Erickson of Philipsburg, MT. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren. She is and was loved greatly by a host of friends, co-workers, and relatives. She will be missed greatly.
