Obituary for Elsie M. Burke

Traditional obituaries utilize the phrase, “preceded in death by.” Traditional word usage neglects the heart and soul Elsie demonstrated on a daily bases. Although “preceded in death by” has its placement, it deviates from the lifestyle, and person she was to her two daughters and many others who loved her deeply. When the man she loved left, Elsie devoted her time to carrying for her daughters, becoming the nurturer, provider, and mainstay. It is important to document examples of Elsie’s kindness, not only to her family but to strangers in need. One winter, she willfully relinquished her only coat to a stranger in need. Coffee always hot, and doorway always open her compassionate heart proceeded her through whole hearted service to others.

A hard-working mother of two, Elsie faithfully maintained three jobs simultaneously attending custodial demands of her church, and serving hot lunch in her daughters’ one room Christian school. Elsie was driven by Christ’s unconditional love, forgiving without hesitation, and discerning of character. Driven and resilient, Elsie held the ability to address any hardship with laughter and creative resolution. When material resources were unavailable, Elsie, still cared for strangers and her family with whatever resources accessible, whether be food or laughter. Elsie’s mischievous nature and sense of humor served as a joyful factor to the lives of those close to her.

One of the most powerful gifts she held was faithfulness, faithfulness to her family alongside a faithful and fervent pursuit of Christ and His truths. When Elsie was taken home, she was surrounded by those she loved and cared for, and by those that deeply loved and cared for her. It is an honor to follow her example of pursuing Christ, loving and forgiving others, being resourceful and resilient, all while laughing during times of hardship.

Elsie M. Burke was preceded in death by her parents George H. Miller and Jessie P. Langford, her brothers Dean Miller, Howard Miller, James Miller, and David Miller. As well as, her two sisters Mary Burkhart and Margie Miller, being the baby of the family. She leaves behind two daughters Cynthia Proell and Patricia Sieler, her grandchildren Melissa Jones, Christopher Jones, Tobi Powell, Jesse Sieler, Cory SIeler, Trey Sieler, Brittany Simmons, and Mathew Andersen. She leaves behind great-grand children Bella Sieler, Sophia Powell, Hanna Powell, Amelia Powell, Titus Powell, Emma Powell, Calvin Simmons, and Harper Jones.
