Obituary for Elaine McDowell
Bertha Elaine McDowell, age 83, of Bonner Springs, Kansas passed away on Dec. 9th, 2020. Her family will be having a Private Funeral Service at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home, then everyone is welcome to the graveside committal service at 12:30pm Monday, Dec. 14th at the Edwardsville Cemetery.
Elaine was born on July 14, 1937 in Lake Charles, Louisiana and was one of four children born to John & Charlotte “Lotte” (Lancaster) Reese. Elaine grew up in the Pineville & Leesville, LA., areas graduating from Leesville High School. Elaine met a young man by the name of Don McDowell while he was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana with the US Army. Elaine married the “Love of her life” Donald Lee McDowell, Sr. on Nov. 14, 1958 at his sister’s home in Bonner Springs. The couple made their home in Bonner Springs where they raised their three sons. Elaine had worked as a Bank Teller at Commercial State Bank in Bonner Springs and Bank Midwest in Edwardsville and as a seamstress at Swingster Clothing Co. in Bonner Springs. She and Don loved to travel with their family, traveling to all 50 states plus Canada and Mexico. Elaine also enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting, puzzles, various arts & crafts, canning vegetables from their garden, and playing the accordion. She was a longtime member of the Victory Assembly of God Church where she played the piano for several years.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Stella Lee, and in 2019, her loving husband of 60 years, Donald Lee McDowell, Sr.
Survivors include her three sons; Donald McDowell, Jr., and wife Ellen, Randy McDowell and wife Rita, and Roger McDowell and wife Joanna all of Basehor, KS., eight grandchildren; Donald McDowell, III and wife Becky, Rebecca Padgett and husband Caleb, Magen Martin and husband Kris, Elizabeth Walker and husband Zach, Randall McDowell, Jr., Emily Phillips and husband Houston, Reese McDowell, Madison Hansen and husband Jacob. Seven great-grandchildren Evelynn, Katherine, Victoria, Alaina, Avery, Benjamin, Bradley, Laurel and two on the way. Two brother’s Frank Reese and wife Mildred and Richard Reese and wife Margie all of Leesville, LA. Two sister-in-law’s; Emma Jean Dunn of Lone Jack, MO., and Betty McDowell of Basehor, KS., as well as several extended family and friends.
