Obituary for Douglas Alan Midyett

Douglas Alan Midyett, age 58, of rural Bonner Springs, Kansas passed away on Sunday, January 29th, 2023 after a long and extremely courageous fight against Huntington’s Disease. Visitation will be 9-10 am, followed by the Funeral at 10 am on Thursday, Feb. 2nd both at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home. Burial in the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas. All are welcome to honor him at the burial. (The family requests that you dress casually, and for the weather.)

Doug was born on July 13, 1964 in Leadville, Colorado. During his childhood, his father was a Civil Engineer so that meant they moved every three years to wherever his jobs took them, even as far as Suriname in South America. In 1977 his family moved to Tucson, Arizona where he met his future wife, before moving yet again. Doug graduated from Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, California. After High School, he enlisted in the US Air Force serving in California and Turkey from 1984 to 1990. He then joined the US Army as an Aviation Warrant Officer piloting Blackhawk Helicopters from 1990 to 1998. During this time in the US Army, he received his Master’s Degree. From 1998 to 2006 he was a Commissioned Officer in the US Air Force continuing as a Pavehawk RESCUE Helicopter Pilot. After retiring from the military he and his family moved to Bonner Springs, KS, where he became a Deputy Sheriff from 2006-2015 for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department.

In 1992 Doug married his Jr. High School sweetheart, Joellyn Roof. Their lives together gave them six amazing children while adventuring and living on three different continents and in 9 different homes, before retiring to Bonner Springs.

Doug was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Gerald Midyett and one brother Jeffrey Scott Midyett.

Survivors include his wife Joellyn Marie Roof Midyett, and their six children: Caitlyn Marie Midyett and her son Nathan Lee Bingham, Trenton Alan Midyett, Nicolas Benjamin Midyett and his wife Morgaine, Mitchel Brent Midyett and his wife Branna and their son Christopher, Bethany Mae Midyett and her fiancée Lewis Bolinger and Zackary Scott Midyett. His mother Judith Lynn Henry Midyett and her husband Ronnie Watkins and one brother Dr. Stephen Jay Midyett and his wife Lisa.
