Obituary for Dorothy JoAnn Sechrist

Dorothy JoAnn (Marchbank) Sechrist, 87, of Bonner Springs, Kansas, passed away on March 11th, 2022 at 12:28 am, Hospice House in Kansas City. Dorothy was born August 20, 1934, at Delphos, Kansas, to Joseph Comley Marchbank and Neva Annetta (Rolph) Marchbank. Her family lived in Delphos until 1943 when they moved to Wichita, Kansas. She graduated from Wichita East High School in 1952, in a class with 479 students, and then attended Wichita University (before it was Wichita State University). In 1957, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. She taught school in the Salina Public Schools until 1959.

On June 14, 1959, she married Elmer Frederick Sechrist, better known as Curly, of Ada, Kansas. They made their home in Salina, Kansas, for 3 years and then moved to Delphos where she taught school until 1967. In 1966, James Allen was born. A year later, Karl Joe was born. Curly and Dorothy moved to Iowa and Salina before moving to Bonner Springs in 1969. Dorothy stayed at home, taking care of her men until 1974, when she returned to teaching in the DeSoto school district until her retirement in 1996, having taught a total of 33 years.

Dorothy was a member of the First Christian Church, Bonner Springs, and a member of the Beatrice Chapter of Eastern Star. Dorothy enjoyed reading, often volunteering at school to read Clifford stories to the kids. She loved watching sports and was an avid fan and cheerleader when her boys and grandkids competed. She followed the Chiefs and Jayhawks, often having to turn off the TV if things weren't going well for her team! One of her favorite memories was attending a KU basketball game with all her family during Christmas break in 2007. Dorothy was a good cook. Most people raved on her chocolate sheet cake. She was kind, caring, generous, and loved by many.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, James and his wife Amber, of Bonner Springs, and Joe and his wife Brenda, of Hillsboro, Kansas. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Collin, Payton, Alexis, Tanner, Emily and her husband, Chancellor, Abigail and Millie, good friend, Alice Campbell, many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly and called or sent a card on their birthday, and a slew of friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Neva, her husband, Curly, and her sister, Doris Jean Regier, who was 3 years, 6 months and 5 days younger than Dorothy.

Visitation will be Friday, March 18th, at 10 am at the Bonner Springs Christian Church with a service to follow starting at 12 o’clock. On Saturday, March 19th, there will be a graveside service at the Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, Kansas, at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made in Dorothy’s name to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO, 64145 or First Christian Church of Bonner Springs, 148 North Nettleton Avenue, Bonner Springs, KS, 66012.
