Obituary for Dorothy Jo Bretthorst

Dorothy Jo Bretthorst, 87, of Bonner Springs, KS passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. The family will receive friends at her Visitation from 9:30 to 11 am and Funeral services will be at 11 AM, both on Tuesday, October 3 at the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church 425 W. Morse Bonner Springs, KS 66012 with burial to follow in the Bonner Springs Cemetery. Dorothy was born June 28, 1936 in Effingham, KS to Chester and Margaret Bushnell. She graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1954. Dorothy married Herbert Lee on November 4, 1956 in Bonner Springs and to this union three children were born Mark, David and Jolinda, the family worked together growing vegetables on their 30-acre farm in Bonner Springs. Dorothy later worked as a school cook from 1979 to 2001 in the Bonner Springs school district. She has been a member of the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church since her early childhood. Dorothy previously taught Children’s Sunday School and served as church secretary for three years. She also enjoyed being a member of the United Methodist Women’s group for many years. Dorothy loved the fellowship of the Adult Sunday School Class known as “The Seekers”. Dorothy married her second husband George Bretthorst in June 1986. They enjoy traveling, including trips to see granddaughters Brandi and Nicole Allerdings in Montana. Dorothy ‘s hobbies included collecting Wizard of Oz memorabilia, some of which were gifts from her friends and family. She was proud to be another “Dorothy from Kansas.” Another interest was reading and studying, a variety of Christian publications, always learning more about God and her Savior Jesus. Dorothy took great pleasure in preparing family holiday meals and was always a loving mother and grandmother. She created memorable scrapbooks for her whole family. Dorothy is survived by her son David Lee of Bonner Springs, KS and her daughter Jolinda Allerdings (Clinton) of Plevna, MT. Her daughter-in-law Kim Lee of Springdale, Ark; two granddaughters Brandi and Nicole Allerdings; and one sister Marjorie Everhart. Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother Larry Bushnell, brother-in-law Richard Everhart, her first husband Herb Lee, her second husband George Bretthorst, and one son Mark Lee. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church.
