Obituary for Donald G. McGee

Donald Gordon McGee, 86, died Friday, November 10, 2023, with Marcia his wife of 67 years at his side, surrounded by his family.

Born October 28, 1937, in Ree Heights, South Dakota, Don was the youngest of four children born to Galen and Dorothy McGee. Along with His brothers Bob and Wilbur McGee and sister Betty Giles. Don's childhood was spent in Ree Heights SD, rural northwest Iowa, and then Madison SD where he moved with his mother while in 7th grade. He had great memories of his grandparents Henry and Rhoda Aust in Madison. Don moved to Aurora, Illinois in December of 1953 and attended East Aurora High School graduating in 1955. He met the love of his life, Marcia Morgan, in December 1953 and they were married on September 22, 1956. Their legacy continues with five children, 11 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Don always enjoyed family gatherings full of grandchildren and smiles.

Don and Marcia provided a rural upbringing for their family while he worked in purchasing for large bulk material handling manufacturing companies in Illinois, Texas, and finally, Missouri where he retired. Don enjoyed horses all of his life. He especially enjoyed Buckskins. Buck was his personal horse while in Madison. Through the years he owned many horses. He worked summers on a ranch outside of Madison where he became quite a horseman. Upon retirement, Don took one day off and then went to work for Kansas City Carriages driving horse carriages for fifteen years. He drove hundreds of horses, 25 different carriages, and wagons with his favorite being the Cinderella carriage. Don was a part of hundreds of engagements, weddings, and special occasions for all ages. He said he enjoyed the smiles and it was the best job he ever had. With his second retirement, Don never missed an opportunity to visit the ranch and see all of the horses. He traded a saddle and carriage seat for a rocking chair, sat on the Bunkhouse porch, and watched the entire herd peacefully graze. Don especially liked the retired horses he used to drive in the old man pasture.

Never far from his South Dakota roots, Don and Marcia moved to a Platte City farm with horses cattle, and even buffalo. Don enjoyed putting up hay and Marcia always had a kitchen full of family and friends who were there to help. Don was an avid hunter and enjoyed the fall Missouri colors. Don and Marcia enjoyed collecting antiques and attending auctions. Became an Auctioneer in 1992 with Son Bob and grandson Cody. Don was always quick with a joke.
