Obituary for Dale Franklin Black

Dale Franklin Black, age 93, of Olathe, KS passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at the Kansas City Hospice House. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on the memorial page and share them with the family.

Dale was born January 21, 1930 in Reno Township, Kansas to Maurice Franklin Black and Addie Bell Brown Black. He grew up on a farm outside of Tonganoxie as the youngest of 14 kids. He graduated from Tonganoxie High School in May 1949. Following high school he was in the U.S. Navy in San Diego from July 17, 1949 to February 6, 1953 when he was honorably discharged as Chief Petty Officer Third Class. While in the Navy he met his future wife, Ruth. They were married on March 21, 1953 and relocated to Kansas City, Kansas where they raised four children, two daughters and two sons. He worked for Statistical Tabulating Corporation and Bethany Medical Center as a Data Processing Manager. After retirement he worked for Pockets Bar and Grill. In 2023 they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with their favorite dinner from Longhorn Steak House. In his younger days Dale was a gardener and an avid golfer. He loved watching westerns, KU Jayhawks basketball and was a
longtime season ticket holder of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, his 13 brothers and sisters, Floyd Black, Beulah Hall, Gladys Zimmerli, Willard Black, Wayne Black, Bill Black, Doris Gilliland, Maurice “Jr” Black, Merle Black, Ruth Puttoff, Raymond Black, Opal Kerns, Alta Wright and one son Danny Black.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of the home, his children Cindy Chronister, Kansas City, KS, David (Cindy) Black, Prescott Valley, AZ, Judy (Brad) Harrison, Lawrence, KS and his beloved dog Princess. Five grandchildren, Shawn
Chronister, Chad Chronister, Heather (Warren) Potter, Kendra Black, Bobby Harrison and four great grandchildren, Braylee, Broderyck, Gracelyn and Layla as well as, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Rd, Kansas City, MO 64145 or Christ Lutheran Church Building Fund, 11720 Nieman Rd, Overland Park, KS 66210.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-3pm on Saturday, January 20, 2024 with a brief service following at the Alden Harrington Funeral Home, 214 Oak St, Bonner Springs, KS 66012. Immediately following the service, the family would like for family and friends to gather in the Family Event Center next to the funeral home to continue the Celebration of Life for Dale.
