Obituary for Charles William "Chuck" Van Cleave

CHARLES WILLIAM VAN CLEAVE
Charles William Van Cleave “Chuck”, 89, of Overland Park, KS passed away on June 15, 2020 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, MO. Chuck was born to Ople and Alvin Van Cleave in Boise, Idaho on December 4, 1930. The Family then moved to St James, MO where Chuck graduated from High School and was then drafted into the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War. He was a trained in Field Artillery at Fort Sill, OK for tanks, and was then assigned to the 513 Transportation Truck Company in Korea till the end of his Military service. He was awarded the Korean Service medal with four Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal the National Defense Service medal and a Presidential Unit Citation. After the service he then moved back to live with his parents in Kansas City, KS until he married his first wife Tabitha June Mahurim, and they moved to the Turner and then Muncie areas in K.C., KS and later to Tonganoxie, KS and eventually to Bonner Springs in 1976 until she passed in 1998, recently he has lived in Lenexa, KS. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife June and a son John Van Cleave in 1978, a grandson Clinton Slawson and a son-in-law David Slawson. Chuck is survived by so many friends and family that will miss him greatly, his son Paul Van Cleave of Tonganoxie, KS; his daughter Carolyn Slawson of Edwards, MO; grandsons Steven Slawson and Storm Slawson, great grandsons Colin Daniels, Sidney Slawson and Clayton Mauer. As well as his lady friend Caroline Cunningham and her daughters Denise and Sharon and their step children Bob and Randy Cunningham all of the home. Graveside Funeral services with full military honors will be at 10 am, Friday, June 26, at the Bonner Springs Cemetery in Bonner Springs, KS. Immediately following there will be a Celebration of Life for Chuck at the Nine Mile Farm 176382 246th St. Tonganoxie, KS 66086
