Obituary for Billy Keith Genz

Billy Keith Genz, age 86, of Kansas City, KS, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023. Bill was born Sept. 8, 1937 in Lenora, KS to Vergie and Hank Genz. He grew up on a farm outside of Lenora with his parents and his younger brother, Leon. He graduated from Lenora High School in 1955. Following high school, he graduated from barber school in Wichita, KS, and moved to Kansas City, which is where he met his future wife, Sandra. They were married on Aug. 31, 1958, and raised three sons and one daughter in the Welborn area of Kansas City, KS. This year they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Bill owned Bill’s Barber Shop at Sunset Plaza, and enjoyed many evenings bowling at Ranch and Sunset Bowling alleys. Bill and Sandi always enjoyed the lake, starting out with weekend camping trips and eventually buying their own cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks. The last 38 years of their married life were spent living in their home in Piper, KS, enjoying time with their family, their swimming pool, working in their yard, and following local sporting teams, especially the Chiefs and the Jayhawks. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and two granddaughters, Teri Genz and Amber Espy. Survivors include his wife, Sandra of the home, sons: Robert Keith (Mary) of Basehor, KS, Jeffrey Scott of Kansas City, KS, Randy Dale (Barbara) of Kansas City, MO, and daughter Jo Lynn O’Brien (Joe) of Camden Point, MO. 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 30th at Alden-Harrington Funeral Home, 214 Oak Street, Bonner Springs, KS. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 am, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 am. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, in honor of Bill.
