Mrs. Bernice Sanders, age 87, of Bonner Springs, Kansas went to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 30, 2020 at her home. Due to Covid restrictions, friends and family may pass through to pay their respects from 9am – 11am on Wednesday, Dec. 9th at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home. The family will then have a Private Funeral Service for only her immediate family members. Friends and family are then welcome to the Committal Service at 1pm at the Bonner Springs Cemetery. Social distancing and masks are required.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the New Light Missionary Baptist Church.
Bernice was born on March 13, 1933 in Brinkley, Arkansas. She was the youngest of five children born to her father Bonnie and mother May Etter (Smith) Dawkines. Bernice and her siblings were raised in Brinkley, AR. On Dec. 1, 1957 she married Archie Sanders Jr. and they lived for a short time in Hughes, Arkansas before moving their family to Bonner Springs in 1960. There they made their home and raised their children. Bernice worked as an Inspector at Swingster Clothing Mfg. in Bonner Springs for several years. When she and Archie moved to Bonner Springs they were members of the First Baptist Church, later they became members of the New Light Missionary Baptist Church, where she was considered a mother of the church. Bernice loved to visit with everyone and was a stranger to no one. She was an active member of the local chapter of the NAACP, and received their Community Service Award just last year.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, her four siblings: Bonnetta, James Lee, Jerlene and Herman, two children: Ernest Leon and Theodis Sanders, and in 2014 her husband of 57 years, Archie Sanders Jr.
Survivors include her children: HT3 Petty Officer Tommy L. Sanders (Navy) and Bonnie E. Saunders (Cedric) all of Kansas City, KS., Willie C. Sanders (Navy) of Bonner Springs, KS., SFC Archie Sanders III (Army Retired) of Apollo Beach, FL., Diana L. Jaccard (Louis D.) of Edwardsville, KS., Theresa A Battle (Irwin) of Tonganoxie, KS., one sister-in-law Vinither McConico, 24 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss her greatly.
