Obituary for John G. Stafos

John G. Stafos
John G Stafos, 73, died at his home after a long battle with cancer on June 18, 2015. Friends may call on Saturday, June 27 from 4-5. A short service will be officiated by Chaplain Kevin Loy from Hospice Advantage at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home. There will be a private interment of his ashes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, Mission, KS or Cribs for Kids in Oklahoma City, OK.

John was born on October 12, 1941. He was raised by his sister and her husband (Mary and Boley Szewc) from the time he was 9. He was an Ironworker, a semi-truck driver, an owner of a furniture and appliance rental business called Avenue Rentals; he repaired radiators and took cars to the crusher at Muncie Auto Salvage, a family owned business. His favorite occupation was as a greyhound dog breeder and owner. NIMBY (Not in My Back Yard…appropriately named by his wife) was the name of his kennel. This career gave him the most joy and pride. A number of his dogs went on to race quite successfully. He met many friends and business acquaintances that remained loyal, life-long friends. Phil Dukeman was one of those acquaintances who was with John during the last 4 months after the passing of his wife Barbara. Phil brought love and laughter to John during this very difficult time of his life (Thank you so much!) Meals on Wheels and the aides at Hospice Advantage were also helpful with the care of John. Thank you. The family would also like to thank the Bonner Springs Fire Department for the many times they assisted John.

John had a huge heart. He was always willing to help someone in need and to lend them a tool from his extensive collection. If he found a good deal, he bought mulitples of that item! It was a running joke with the family that he always had 2 or 3 of whatever you needed. He was always willing to teach someone what he knew and to lend a hand however he could.

John was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, his step-daughter Joyce Sedorcek, his grandson Trevor Heidling, his brothers Billy & Jimmy Stafos, his sisters Mary (& Boley Szewc) and Helen Athey and his parents George and Lillie Stafos. Survivors include daughters Cathy Stafos and her three children (Melinda, Kara and Rickey) and Debbie (Bill) Kremers and her four sons (Adam, Kyle, Neal and Alec.) plus numerous nieces and nephews and their children as well as many greyhound family members and friends.
